Russian scientists took a mother rabbit who just had eight babies and put this rabbit on a submarine. True story! The sub went to sea for 4 months. Remember, they don't have a humane society for animals in Russia (I jest- I think). They randomly over the four months killed a rabbit, then, another, then another. Meanwhile mama rabbit has been eating carrots and showing no remorse or behavior habit changes.

There was one issue though.

Mama rabbit was wired and monitored for her integral rhythms, heat beat, brain waves, etc. At exactly the time that a baby rabbit was killed, there was a major disturbance in the data being monitored. Something, a field maybe, within the rabbit KNEW what was not consciously known, nor physically demonstrated in any external change. As Rupert Sheldrake says, a single bee has its own field which exists within a field of bees, which exists within a resonating field of all insects, ad infinitum!

Much is now happening, very quickly, even in stealth, and yet there's a consciousness that knows. Whatever is building will be known long before December 21, 2012: but surely on that date we'll look back in amazement and wonder. Might we call it a 2012 Final Fantasy?

Additionally, it has a super efficient charger (where traditionally you lose a lot of wasted energy), and is made without toxic chemicals like phthalates, brominated flame retardants (BFR), and beryllium, to name a few. Plus, its delivered in recycled packaging, too.

3. LG Pop GD510

LG is another company that has recently launched a cell phone with solar cells embedded in the actual phone. A slim-line phone with simple, sleek design features, the LG POP (LG GD510), can capture enough energy for 2.25 minutes of talk time in about 10 minutes of charge-time. And like the other green phones mentioned here, it comes with additional eco-friendly features.

These include the fact that it is PVC-free and made without BFR. And it has a feature that will notify you when the phone is fully charged so that you can unplug the charger to save additional energy. It was released in Europe during the fourth quarter last year and should be available in other regions soon.

4. GreenHeart by Sony Ericsson

With some of the greenest features of any cell phones on the market, Sonys two new optionsthe Elm and the Hazelare being billed as devices that go above most other green phones out there. Part of their GreenHeart project which aims to integrate environmental advances across Sony Ericssons entire product lines, these phones are loaded with eco-friendly features.

Both are constructed in part of recycled plastic and are made without toxic chemicals commonly found in electronics. And both come with energy-efficient chargers to cut back on phantom energy losses. My printer is a nice man. He cares a lot for his customers and even more for the environment. He recently was awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation for environmental management. My printer is also a very curious man. Because he took great pride in his achievement, he decided to share the good news with his clients. He did so by producing a full colour 2 page leaflet, printed on heavy paper and send in snow-white envelopes, delivered by Royal Mail using a fleet of Royal Mail vans to deliver some 1000 letters to his customers, who read and binned it, so it can be collected by a fleet of London dustmen with their lorries and be burned or taken to landfill sites.

I wonder how much energy and raw material the production and delivery of this promotional piece has consumed and how much CO2 it will produce during its short life-cycle. I think, what ever it was, it was too much and just shows the problem with environmental standards and a false eagerness to behave politically correctly.

What are certifications worth that attest your company best practice in environmental terms but do not set up standards s keeping you away from producing useless marketing collateral, which goes, after having consumed raw materials, added to your carbon footprint and have gone straight to the bin after reading it? Its not worth the full colour paper it is printed on, and it seems to me rather a warning sign that says beware of this supplier, he has gone through great length, consumed a lot of energy and left a carbon footprint size 13 to get his environmental management certification.

How clever is your marketing thinking? Does everything you do interest your customers? Is it not, that the only thing your customers is interested in, is whats in it for them, and do they care a carrot about how great their suppliers feel they are doing? Had the friendly printer celebrated his achievement by combining his leaflet with an offer to order recycling copy paper, and instead of having a full colour leaflet in a separate envelope, had it be a postcard on recycling paper, or even better, an email campaign I would have understood.

How intimidated are we and how compelled do we feel to adhere certain policies and standards, if we apply so much rigor in meeting them that we violate the very idea by doing so? It seems like we are going green, no matter what cost to the environment. A trend, a fad or just another example of skipped common sense?

Perhaps it also shows that even for small businesses the cost of using a consultant can save them from suffering far greater damage as a result from self-harming, image-damaging campaigns.

In short, sustainable development implies progress that meets the need of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Many cultures over the course of human history have recognized the need for harmony between environment, society and economy. In 1983, the United Nations had set up an international commission to resolve the conflict between the interests of economic development and the interests of environment that has created problems round the world.

The commissions report, Our Common Future, popularly known as The Brundtland Report (following the name of its chairperson Gro Harlem Brundtland) that coined the term sustainable development suggested that economic development cannot stop, but it must change course to fit within the earths ecological limits. The report observed that unintended changes are occurring in the atmosphere, in soil, in water, among plants and animals. Nature is bountiful but it is also fragile and finely balanced. There are thresholds that cannot be crossed without endangering the basic integrity of the system. The commission alerted that today we are close to many of those thresholds.

Corporate sector must make money; and staying in corporate sector and prospering is a fundamental value of any for-profit enterprise. At the same time, corporate sector is required to take into account the interests of all stakeholders that include customers, employees, investors, vendors, government and the society.

The late 1990s and early 2000s were turbulent periods for the global investment community, with vast amount of shareholder wealth being created and destroyed. Both the institutional and retail investors have learnt some painful lessons, re-examined their assumptions about what constitute tangible and intangible value, and broadened their scope to consider characteristics that could lead to long term financial success.

One area of corporate performance that has begun to capture the attention of investment professionals is sustainable development: a set of responsibilities that contributes directly to an organizations risk management profile and is sometimes also linked with corporate responsibility.

There is considerable evidence that sustainable development contributes to shareholder value in a variety of ways-not only through tangible contribution such as risk reduction and profitability improvement, but also through intangible asset creation such as brand equity, human capital, etc. Operating Corporate by pursuing the sustainable development path strengthens an organizations intangible assets in a number of ways that in turn leads to tangible shareholder value creation.

Many of these approaches: e.g. eco-efficiency, LCA, full cost accounting, industrial ecology, systems based pollution prevention, etc. are new to the Corporate world. Businesses keen to benefit from transition to sustainable development path therefore need to prepare themselves and have a longer time horizon and a broader set of goals than traditional companies.

Realization and recognition of the significance of sustainable development approach usually starts from the top management. However, best intentions are meaningless if these are only lodged in the minds of a few individuals. Values of sustainable development have to permeate throughout the organization. Changing a companys culture and outlook requires a contribution from everyone starting from the chief executive officer and permeating through senior, middle, junior management and staff and all working as a team.

The World Corporate Council for Sustainable Development defines sustainability report as public reports by companies to provide internal and external stakeholders with a picture of corporate position on activities on economic, environmental and social dimensions.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a multi-stakeholder, international body with a mission to develop and disseminate globally applicable sustainability reporting guidelines, has developed the framework for sustainability reporting for companies reporting on the economic, environmental and social dimensions of their activities, products and services. The broad structure of sustainability report as developed by GRI contains:

This information facilitate financial reporting with forward-looking information that could enhance the report users understanding of such key value drivers as human capital formation in the company, corporate governance, management of environmental risks and the capacity to innovate.

Sustainability reporting has been steadily rising since 1993 and has considerably increased in the recent years. The principal Corporate drivers for sustainability reporting are to:

Indian companies now see sustainability reporting as central to corporate social responsibility with passive philanthropy no longer a sufficient response to rising expectations.
